What is NewsBytes?
Each day, NewsBytes gets articles from the New York Times, the BBC, and the Sydney Morning Herald and summarises the content using AI.
It is then presented in a simple, scrollable format.
This aims to solve two problems:
1. Many people - especially the younger generation - don't read the news these days as there is so much information and so many sources to get the news from. By presenting the
articles in 'byte'-sized shape, I hope to make reading the news more digestible and possible to accomplish in 5 minutes a day.
2. Different news sources are biased in different ways. By collating multiple sources, I hope to try and present a neutral view.
Specifics:
The BBC and SMH articles are retrieved and summarised twice a day: once in the morning, and once in the afternoon. This should be a wide
enough net to capture all of the articles per day.
Because the NYT API does not allow me to summarise the content using AI, I instead retrieve the articles every two hours.
So note that the text in the NYT articles is just a synopsis provided with the article, and not a full-fledged AI summary.
Upcoming Features
1. More news sources: the Guardian, the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal will be added soon.
2. A button that is attached to every article, which, when clicked, will show the equivalent article from all the other sources. I think this will be a great
way to demonstrate how different sources frame the same topic. This will be a bit tricky to implement - hopefully my algorithm skills are alright. We'll see how it goes.
